Eventi a Pisa: tradizioni, storia e spettacoli da non perdere

Pisa non è solo la città della Torre Pendente, ma anche un luogo ricco di tradizioni ed eventi che ogni anno attirano visitatori da tutto il mondo. Se

Pisa is not just the city of the Leaning Tower, but also a place rich in traditions and events that every year attract visitors from all over the world. If you want to experience the authentic soul of the city, here are some of the most evocative events that turn Pisa into a stage of history and spectacle.

## 1. **Pisan New Year (March 25)**

Did you know that in Pisa the new year begins on March 25? This tradition has its roots in the Middle Ages, when the city followed the so-called "Style of the Incarnation," which made the start of the year coincide with the feast of the Annunciation. It was only in 1749 that the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Francesco Stefano of Lorraine, imposed the current calendar.

The highlight takes place inside the Pisa Cathedral. At exactly noon, a ray of sunlight filters through a window of the cathedral and hits a precise spot above Giovanni Pisano's pulpit, symbolically marking the beginning of the new Pisan year. The city comes alive with historical parades in medieval costumes, official ceremonies, and reenactments that transport visitors back in time. A unique opportunity to witness an ancient tradition that still excites the people of Pisa today.

## 2. **Luminara of San Ranieri (June 16)**

One of the most magical nights of the year. The Luminara was born in 1688 to celebrate the transfer of the relics of San Ranieri, the city's patron saint, and since then Pisa has been illuminated with over 70,000 candles, arranged along the palaces of the Lungarni.

All electric lights are turned off and the city transforms into a sea of flames. The candles, placed in glass cups and fixed on wooden frames called "biancherie," follow the architectural profiles of the buildings, creating an incredible scenic effect. The evening culminates with a fireworks display that lights up the sky above the Arno, giving those present an unforgettable experience.

## 3. **San Ranieri Regatta (June 17)**

After the night of the Luminara, Pisa prepares for another exciting event: the San Ranieri Regatta. This competition on the Arno, which sees four historic boats compete, represents the city districts: San Martino, San Francesco, Sant’Antonio, and Santa Maria.

The regatta is rowed, but the real peculiarity comes at the finish line: a rower from each crew must climb a tall pole and grab the "paliotto," the victory cloth. The difficulty lies not only in the climb, but also in the balance, since the boats continue to move on the waters of the Arno.

## 4. **Game of the Bridge (last Saturday of June)**

A spectacular event that dates back to the 15th century and still today ignites the competitive spirit of the people of Pisa. Two city factions, Tramontana and Mezzogiorno, compete in an epic test of strength on the Ponte di Mezzo.

The day opens with an impressive historical parade: over 700 participants parade through the city center streets wearing sumptuous medieval costumes, among drummers, nobles, knights, and soldiers. The actual competition consists of pushing a heavy iron cart along a track, trying to overcome the opponent's position. Once, the challenge was a real physical clash between the contenders, but in 1807 it was abolished for safety reasons. Today, the modern version maintains the spirit of the challenge without direct combat.

The event is followed with great enthusiasm by the people of Pisa, who side with their own faction and experience the game with overwhelming passion.

## 5. **Pisa Marathon (December)**

An unmissable event for sports lovers. Born in 1999, the Pisa Marathon crosses the historic center, runs along the Arno, and ends with an exceptional finish line: Piazza dei Miracoli, at the foot of the Leaning Tower.

In addition to the classic 42 km race, there are shorter routes for those who prefer shorter distances and a non-competitive walk. The event attracts athletes from all over the world, fascinated by the idea of running among Pisa's historic monuments. The finish in Piazza dei Miracoli makes the race even more special, giving participants a unique and evocative setting.
