The Medici Arsenals and the Republican Arsenals represent an important testament to Pisa's glorious maritime tradition. Built between the 13th and 16th centuries, they were the heart of the city's naval production, used for the construction and maintenance of the vessels of the powerful Maritime Republic of Pisa.
The Republican Arsenals, located near the Cittadella, were built in the 13th century and housed the shipyards where the famous Pisan galleys were built, fundamental for dominance over the seas.
The Medici Arsenals, built later in the 16th century by order of the Medici, are located along Lungarno Simonelli and today house the Museum of Ancient Ships of Pisa, where you can admire exceptional archaeological finds, including perfectly preserved ancient Roman boats.
